jrocker sketch

It's the same guy as last time
I like drawing him...even though I almost scrapped this sketch on more than one occasion. I finally finished it on Wednesday and could not get my scanner to work until today.
And, as always, my scanner messed up the edges/color value=_=;
You can't see the pencil strokes in the original sketch

nice... like your lips for this piece.. reminds me of toshiya =\ but watch out for your hair shading/toning and your shoulders' proportion. but, nice work!!

your shading is impeccable..

i just have one suggestion and critique as far drawing goes..
dont pay so much attention to detail.. i can see by the way you draw that shading and detail is more important to you.. maybe because you think it looks better or to achieve realism..

while realism is a part of art you might wanna explore other techniques.. dont be so anal about detail but rather explore the basics like the human form or more specifically maybe the headstructure. do you take art classes?

the reason why i say all this.. is because you draw like me d=) not to compliment my own self by comparing to your beautiful drawings.. but thats basically what my art teacher told me. once you understand the basics and the beauty of the human form and how to captivate it on paper.. then everything else like shading will be nothing compared to that.

Detail is very important to me.
Human form is also important. But, I don't quite understand everything that you are getting at there...Are you suggesting anatomy classes? I haven't taken any yet, but plan to in the near future.
I do take a beginner's art class now. I didn't last year because I flunked art the year before that.
I'm more interested in expression(mainly the eyes) than any other feature when I draw. I'm often really tempted to draw the eyes first, but I know that it would end me up with a frankenstein drawing and a lot of headaches later on.
...I have no idea if what I just wrote made any sense at all^_^;

well... agree partly with both of you... but i haven't much to say cuz i don't attend class or even read up books or tutorials on art =\

expression is indeed important, but before that i still suggest you get the whole proportion right. ^_^;

ok so in my class we were doing a portrait of some model. she was sittin on a chair and i was pretty much under her just to the right of her so i can get a good angle on her beautiful nose and to catch the right light. so im working furiously for 15 mins trying to make it look like her as much as i could. after about ten mins and being satisfisfied with my portrait, my teacher pulls me aside and critiques my work. i would hope that he would notice the angle of the face being consistent with the nose and the quality of shading of the forehead and particularly the eyes. he takes my book and starts flippin to a clean page and draws that same model while he explains my technique and what i could improve upon. i wasn't too interested at what he was saying but rather how he drew this model. a buncha circles, lines, and squigglies lines later, i noticed something different with his sketch and my drawing. his approach was much simpler than mine and his shading was just a brush of an ink pen. thats it. just one stroke. even when he began i noticed the conjoining circles that he made actually looked like the head of the model, even tho it was just a circle, where as i would make an imperfect sketch of the head and tole myself "i could fix it later" and completely diminish a brand new eraser. i compare the two and even tho his sketch was way rougher than mine.. i could tell this guy was talented... it even loooked more realistic than my so called realistic drawing which took me five times longer with shading and the works. he never even used an eraser. from that point on my technique has changed and my view on realism changed also. i told myself it doesnt matter how the light looks or a particular detailed area if your basics isn't there.

i guess my point is we're mixtures of shapes and form. circles, triangles, squares, ovals other geometric and ambiguous shapes. thats the basic. if you wanna achieve realism begin there. Although lighting and shading is a very important part of drawing... it's only part of it. im in no way discouraging it. but tap into your full potential and dont be stuck in only one part of it. work on proportions and perspective and 3d vs 2d. theres more but i forgot d=)
keep it up. i hope i get to see more of your work and progression.

p.s. sorry if my critiques sound judgemental. thats how they come off and i cant help it. they should be comments helping you to progress as an artist and not to discourage. hopefully your open minded to these comments. remember to keep drawing! d=)

oh yeah...my sister keeps on trying to coach me to use more geometrical base for my sketches. She's infinitely better at all this stuff than I am.
And don't worry. I don't find your comments in any way offensive.
By the way, you must be in art college, right? I don't know anywhere else that you'd have a real live model to draw from^_^

oh, and as for tones...I really messed up there^_^;; I drew in the shadowing way too dark and spent a really long time trying to lighten him up without having to start everything all over again. I was like, "Oh no!!!"^^;

when drawing humans, its best to start with the basics of geomertry. thats what i learnt in my drawing classes too...my drawing teacher could sketch a person's face with minimal lines accurately and with just a few lines of shading, and yet as mr kenvsryu says, you can tell damn this person is talented. they emphasized importance of line quality as well as the proportions.

i usually start out with a circle for the skull then drawing lines horizontally to indicate where the eyes, nose and mouth are, then vertical line for the nose, and also adding the chin.just like tat for the basics! shading is just to add beauty to something that is already there, you know what im saying?

you can buy those art dummies, you know those wooden doll things...and those will help with human geometrics! why don't you try using charcoal to sketch? oh you could also try drawing skulls first, cos when you understand the human skeleton you can draw human figures pretty good!! we had to draw skeletons over and over, and all the human muscles too -.-"
