Talking mexican christmas

in mexico, we celebrate christmas with some traditions that are found nowhere but here

when spanish colonizers came, the monks made the last poet survivors of moctezuma's court write acts that described how 'indians' met the new born christ and how the devil (back then, mexican gods) tried to stop them from meet the "one and only"... it evolved and now it's called a "pastorela" where rural people go to see the newborn messiah and satan tries to stop them in some weird and funny way with the help of the sins (he always fails but it's worth seeing). "pastorelas" start from... uhm... I think from december 17th to december 26th... I don't remember

well, at home we represent a "posada" (kinda INN)... with candle at the hands we start a walk around the house (or the street, some people gather at the church to walk from and towards there) while singin "ora pronovis" ir something (I just sing it, don't write it)... when the walk is over, half people go thru a door and the rest stay outside asking for letting them in (like the parents of jesus when he was about to born). the song then is also a tradition and it's like "in the name of the heaven, I beg you for ascile, cause my beloved wife can't walk" and the others say "here's not an inn, keep on going, I can't open, maybe it's a thief" and the story goes till the door opens...

the "piņata" stuff is also a mexican tradition from the colony times... it was originally a jar covered on paper and with 7... uhm... how do you say?? uh... you know... uhm... as a star with 7... 7-something, each one representing a capital sin, the objetive is to break it so the evil will disappear (and it's not used on every party as cartoons would make you think)

we drink a punch made of some fruits (I don't remember their names in english but they are caņa, tejocote, guayaba and tamarindo)

under the pine we put the "birth" (can't think in other word for "nacimiento") wich is a little representation with dolls for the place of birth of jesus, on midnight december 24th (nochebuena) we put the baby jesus doll after singing lullaby songs to him...

well, I think that's what we are used to do on christmas... yeah, also, gifts, and a... shit!! what's the word for that event when somebody raises a cup of an alcoholic drink, tells his kind of wish and then everyone else does, sharing the wish and drinking from the cup??

man... I'm dumb and sleepy

but I wanted to share this with you nice people of jusunlee forums
