Chapter One: The Beginning

Story of my life. Stick boy, the dreaded name. Usually kids don't care about those kind of things, but my one wish was to become nice and plump. I never have enough to eat so I try to be happy with what I have. With everyone calling me stick boy, and me being poor; no one wants to be my friend. It's not like I'm desparate. I have my older sister who's just about the nicest person in the world. Maybe that's because she's poor like me. I'm not totally sure... Being five years old, I get confused about adults often. All I know is that every ah jum ah says that poor kids should hang out with poor kids because rich kids are better. I'm not sure why, but my umma gets mad when she hears them so I get mad too. I don't like my mom being all sad. Sometimes, I wonder if the adults are right, are if they're just clueless and try to split everyone up. My sister cries sometimes like my umma did when appa left for work and never came back. I still don't understand why a business trip takes over one year. I also don't understand why appa just doesn't send us money. I hate it when umma has to go to work. It makes me feel sad when umma comes back and her back hurts or when she's so tired but still tries to make my sister and me dinner. When umma's not here, noona usually makes us sometime yummy to eat. Once in a while, umma and noona go to work because noona likes to work so I have to stay home and make myself ramyun. It gets annoying being at home and making myself ramyun. Umma always says that she's sorry and that she'll take me out to eat one day...

"Ahn Shinwon!"
"Noona!"
"I'm not going to be able to come home early today."
"Awww.. why not?"
"I have to do something."
"Okay noona~"
"Dannyah?"
"Noona! You never call me Danny. Remember what you said, we're in Korea so I'm Ahn Shinwon! I forgot all of my English anyways."
"Yeah... Shinwonah?"
"Yea?"
"If...if...appa called and um... if he asked if you wanted to go to him what would you say?"
"Appa never calls us."
"I know.. but what if?"
"I don't know... probably I'll talk to umma."
"Ahn Shiwon! You have to be a big boy."
"Noona.. could we still be with umma?"
"No, only umma or appa not both."
"I love Umma more."
"I love you Danny."
"I'm SHINWON!"
"I love you Shinwon, Danny, I don't care what your name is.. I love you."

"Hi Shinwon~ Is your Umma home?"
"No."
"What about your Noona?"
"No."

"I'm five years old!"

"Old enough for what?"
"Can you baby-sit my daughter? I really have to go...somewhere."
"When will you be back?"
"I don't know..."

"So, your sister left?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you leave?"
"Because she went to see her friends."
"If you could be with your Appa would you leave your Umma?"
"No."
"Oh, okay then bye shinwon."

"So...who are you?"
"I'm Haejung."
"I'm Shinwon."

"How old are you?"
"I'm...um...uh...one....two..three...fo..ur.. I'm four! yep I'm four."
"I'm five!"

"What were you going to say?"
"I'm not allowed to tell you... I can only tell your Umma."

"Oppa?"

"Let's play!"

"House."

"That's a girl's game! No big-boy ever plays HOUSE!"

"Okay! But that's only because I'm being nice. And because I'm your Oppa!"

~That Night~

"Shinwonah?"
"Yes Umma?"
"Who's this girl?"
"An Ahjumah told me to baby-sit her."
"Um... Ahjumah?"
"Yes?"
"My Umma told me to tell you something."
"Tell me what?"
"I'm suppose ta live with you."
"WHY?... I mean why?"
"Because my Umma went to America with Shinwon Oppa's Appa and Noona."
"WHAT? Umm... Dannyah? Can you take Haejung to Noona's room?"
"Okay."
"Ahjumah? Am I in trouble?"
"No... I just thought that you were tired."
"Oh, okay thank you Ahjumah!"
"Let's go Haejung."
"Okay Oppa."

"Haejungah?"
"Yes Oppa?"
"I'm happy that you're going to stay here."
"Me too!"
"What's this?"
"Don't touch it! It's just that sometimes Umma gets mad at me. I do bad things so she hits me. Don't worry, everyone gets hit like this. I'm fine..."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure.. and now that I'm staying here, I'm not going to be bad so I'm not going to get hit."
"Good."
"Good-night Oppa."
"Good-night Haejungah!"

That was eight years ago.. I haven't ever seen my sister since. Haejung has been a replacement. She's been my younger sister who takes care of me even if I should be the one taking care of her. Our lives haven't been easy, but it has been fun...

"Susan. Hi, what's new?"
"Um.. I'm going to America again."
"Cool."
"Oppa! Who or what do you keep on looking at?"

"Then why aren't you talking to me Yoon Kyesang!"
"'Cause."
"I thought you get mad when I call you Yoon Kyesang."
"Yea, sure."
"Oppa!!"
"Do you see that girl right there?"
"Chorong?"
"Yeah. I fell in love with her."
"WHAT?? Whatever... I'm leaving tomorrow so you better be at the airport by seven. Okay?"
"Yeah, I'll be there."

Wait... What did Susan say again? Ahh. I wish that I actually listened to her. I'll just ask Danny. I would have never met Susan if I didn't meet Danny. Danny's younger sister, but she's not actually his sister she's just living with her and..... wait... I just confused myself... Okay! She's just there. Yeah.... Anyways, Haejung's best friend was Susan but Susan went to America and then she came back so she's kind of going back and forth back and forth. She's the same age as Haejung and they're a year younger than me and Danny. Danny and I are the same age. We were a group kind of, until Chorong came to our school. I really wanted her to be my girlfriend, but as usual Jang Woo Hyuk took her.

"You're in BIG trouble Chorong."
"Why?"
"You know that girl Susan?"
"Yeah..."
"She's out for blood."
"Your kidding."
"It's cause Yoon Kyesang has a crush on you."
"Are you serious? He's such a cutie."
"But you're going out with Jang Woo Hyuk."
"Awww. Your right. It's not like that matters."
"Yes it does..."
"Okay. Then why don't you go out with him?"
"Me?"
"Yeah. You."
"But I don't even go to your school!"
"So?"
"What do you mean by so?"
"You can just ask your Daddy if you can enroll."
"Come on. You know that he'd never let me."
"Just bat your pretty eyes... Just because your rich doesn't mean that you can't have a life!"

"I have to go home. My parents are going to be out of town for a week."

"Kyesang?"
"Hi....Chorong."
"Hey, this is Jihi. Anyways, she's having a party at seven tonight. You're going to be there right?"
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Great~ I'll see you there!"

Seven.... I was sure there's something I have to do at seven... Ahhh! If only I could remember. I bet you it was something that Susan was talking about yesterday... I bet it was that she wanted to meet me at the party. Yeah, that's got to be right~ Jihi. What a beautiful name. Sigh, she's so pretty like in all of my dreams. Her smile is like an angels..

"Yoon Kyesang!"
"What's up Danny?"
"You going to be there with Susan tonight?"
"Yeah. Don't worry. I wouldn't ever disappoint Susan."
"Good. And... what were you doing with Jihi?"
"What about her?"
"I don't know if you didn't know... but everyone went out with her.. just stay away from her."
"You don't understand."
"I know her.. just don't be around her anymore."
"I can't... She's so beautiful, I'm in love."
"Don't do anything. And you'll be there right?"
"Yeah sure."

~~AT SEVEN~~

"Hi Jihi."
"Kyesang right?"
"Yeah."
"This is a nice house."
"Thanks."
"Do you want to dance?"
"I'd love to!~"

"Haejungah. I'm just going to wait a while. He promised me that he'd be here."
"Susan, I don't think that he's going to keep his word. He broke his promise all of the other times, what makes you think that he's going to come?"
"Haejung. I still can't leave without seeing him."
"I don't want to see your heart broken again girl."
"Don't worry. My flight's in thirty minutes, I'll just wait until then. Hi Shinwon Oppa!"
"He's not with me."
"Oh..."


<THIRTY MINUTES LATER>

"You're so beautiful Jihi."
"^^"
"I think that I'm in love with you."
"Really?"
"Really. I love you Susan."
"What?!"
"I meant Jihi."
"You just called me Susan!"
"NO...I meant Jihi."
"Good. I thought you did.."

"Bye Susan."
"Yeah... I'll come back soon. It's just for three months!"
"I'll still miss you Susan. You're like my sister!"
"Don't worry."
"See ya Susan."
"Bye Oppa."
"Hey, um... you guys?"
"Yeah?"
"When I come back can you not tell Kyesang? Just tell him that I'm not coming back... no just don't mention me.. he's going to forget about me anyways."
"Susan.."
"Bye~"


<FOUR O'CLOCK AM>

"Yoon Kyesang~"
"Danny? You're drunk!"
"Don't tell me what I am!"
"Watch out.. What's wrong?"
"You bastard!"
"Danny what's wrong?"
"You said that you'd be there and Susan believed you! You said that you'd be at the airport and guess what? You broke her heart for the last time. Now, she never wants to see you again!"
"Susan..."
"Now you remember don't you!"
'Where is she?"
"She's gone. And she never wants to see you again. I don't ever want to see you either. Don't ever let me or Haejung see your face ever again."
"Danny..."
"DON'T EVEN SAY MY NAME!"

How could I forget about Susan? How could I ever be so dumb? It's okay, I have Jihi. I love Jihi, don't I?
