hereditary?

there are those who have alcoholic parents and they end up being alcoholics themselves... is that really hereditary? And then, you have those who's parents are alcoholics while they're not.

also, there are certain things that happen in a parents life that the child goes through also... for example, his parents married young, so he married young also. hereditary?

what are your thoughts?

sounds like a nurture vs. nature debate.

the writings of E.O. Wilson come to mind for your hereditary alcoholic idea. I'm not sure where i am on the issue. I used to think it was all how you were nurtured, but Wilson writes some rather convincing ideas that make the other side very belieavable. Enough to make the lines blurred for me anyway.

i don't think it's hereditary. my mom takes just a sip of wine and gets a headache, but my sister and i can drink half the glass. but i'm talking about the capacity to drink; if you mean the tendency to, well, i think that depends on how you were raised. it could go both ways tho; if a kid grows up in an environment where everyone's stealing and doing drugs, he probably would do it too; or, he could move away from all of that and start something for himself.

i don't think it's hereditary... for me, it has more to do with the environment in which the kid is raised.

that's why people say a kid that's abused will most likely abuse their own kids later on.

yeah thats what i think... that the environment effects u and not hereditary, if a person sees people doing something they start feeling that it's right, or like it's sub-concious to them, like... they have to do it because it just... comes to them

here's an example from a science textbook:

a scientist got 10 rat's and cut all of their tails to see, when they reproduced, if their offspring's tails would be short when they're born. But the tail sizes appealed to be the normal size, not cut or anything.

its not inherited, it's learned through example. the child sees that the parent uses alchohol to get through problem filled times, and imitates his/her parent.
