"During the dog days of summer, celebrities like Britney Spears don't wrestle their hair into straight submission, they cultivate carefree curls. "It's a sexy look that has a youthful, rebellious edge to it," says Kattia Solano, hairstylist and owner of Butterfly Studio in N.Y.C. And with the right layers, it looks great with any face shape. The best news? To get the look, it's best not to put in tons of effort. "If you try too hard, you take away the sexiness," Solano explains. Instead, wet hair and comb through a moisturizing mousse, such as Kérastase Nutritive Elasto-Curl ($37; planetbeauty.com), to soften them. To enhance the shape, coil random sections of hair around the face and pin them up. Then let locks dry, remove pins and shake out. If you have straight hair, it may take a little more effort to get this style: Apply a texturizing hair product, then twist it and secure it in a loose bun and blow-dry. If necessary, use a curling iron to add a couple of sporadic curls. "Just remember that your hair is not supposed to look perfect," says Solano.
