Reverend Thomas Malthus, and he wasn't much of a philosopher, he just had warped views on overpopulation. He didn't encourage mass killings, just condoned "population controllers."

I think it's more fair to say that most kids in school don't ever hear about heidegger or spanos, they might hear about foucault, they probably have heard about of hobbes and marx though. I think most kids are at least familiar with the Greeks, Plato, Aristotle, etc.... Then if you take a math class you're bound to hear about Renee Descartes. If you take philosophy classes that are sometimes offered in certain secondary schools, you'd probably hear about those people as well as Spinoza, Kierkegaard, and others... haha, too many to list. But I don't think many philosophy classes are offered in the average secondary school...

EDIT - if you take debate then you'd probably hear about all these philosophers and more, including all the ones victor listed, there's many more where those came from though..

its a shame how we don't really learn about philosophy and philosophers much in high school... the closest class they provide for that field is psychology at our school... i personally am not one to really find intrest in philosophy but it does spark some intrest and its sad that such a great class isn't offered to students... personally i know some of the greek/roman philosophers (mainly the famous ones everyone in the whole damn world knows) and marx, hobbes, descartes (didn't he invent some mathematical formula? i ferget), and such... but as for the others its my first time hearing about them... i feel deprived already...

hey by the way was freud a philosopher? or was he a psychotic psychologist? haha dunno...

yeah, we really only have one class that could feasibly be called a philosophy class. It really isn't because we never learn about them at all, it's just a discussion class where we talk about it, called Theory of Knowledge. Anyway, philosophers that you'd hear about in that class have pretty much been named: Marx, Artistotle, Plato, Spinoza, Freud, Descartes, Kant. It's a really western class despite how much they say it's not. It's a nice class though

yea it really is a shame  learning philosophy strengthens the mind's capabilities to process thoughts and arguments.

Well we learned about Rousseau and he seemed really cool. But then my friend pointed out that he had sex with a 13 yr. old milk maid repeatedly.

Voltare seems really cool too. He was a jerk but if you go around believing every rumor you hear, you'll end up with no friends.

the only reason i can see aristotle so great is because he dismissed so many of plato's flawed ideals. Plato wrote some good stuff, but from what i've learned his whole "world of ideals" clouds over his "republic" stuff. I'm sure he did more, but from my limited knowledge, i think he was far too much into spirituality to be accepted today for what it is. I mean, it was all so theoretical, not that that's a bad thing but i can't believe that today. I'm sure aristotle did other great things, but that's all i know him for pretty much.

I don't think voltaire or einstein were really philosophers. Voltaire was a satirist, and Einstein was a physicist. Although, I suppose if you really want to consider their works philosophy you could.

nobody mentions Adam Smith???
too bad, he is the father of economics

school doesn't teach much, but my social studies teach was a economist himself, so he talks alot of him.
