i don't think most of those will bomb, the first movies for all of those were either moderately or really popular, and releasing a sequel is an easy way to capitalize off of that popularity and make a lot of money.

i think sequels work when they have the original cast back ...

having a new plot with different people who are supposed to be the original people

ie. clarice from hannibal

theres a couple of reasons why those particular movies and other sequels are made.

one is money.

if you look at those particular movies they made an obscene amount of money. whether it was good or not.. u watched it.. and so did million of people around the world. If you do your h.w. these movies make less than half of their money on ticket sales and even more on world wide marketing. remember them tomb raider taco bell cups? and spiderman.. pleease.. now you get my point. a sequel for these movies is more of a guarantee and less of a risk for these film companies.

another reason why people like movies like.. star warz episode 2, or lethal weapon 4, or even bad boys is because they know and love the characters. through 1 or 3 movies they enjoyed watching murtaugh and riggs battle the russian terrorists or the birth of darth vadar. they got to know these imaginary characters and are familiar with them. if you lovem why not make more?

those are a couple of reasons as far as sequels go excluding trilogys. trilogys are whole different thing.

are they making more bourne identity movies? The book series is a trilogy, and i hope they make more cause the first one was such a good movie.
