[news] Singapore Soup Slinger Given 6 Months

SINGAPORE - A Singapore man was sentenced to six months in jail for slinging a ladle of seafood soup at his boss in a fit of anger, local media reported Friday.

Lim Hang Heng, a 43-year-old cook at a soup stall in Singapore's red light district, faced charges of inflicting pain after hurling the soup during a shouting match on June 25, the Straits Times newspaper said.

Lim's boss suffered minor burns to his chest, shoulder and arm, the report said.

"His foolish misdeeds were a result of a sudden provocation by the victim," Lim's lawyer was quoted as saying at the sentencing in a Singapore district court Thursday.

Court officials could not immediately confirm the report.

HAHAH!!! this can only happen in singapore

do you know the police can hold a suspect for 2 years in prison here, unlike in the US which is only 24 hours.

its not THAT BAD!!! everyone always get a bad impression on singapore becuz of their rules. well if u follow the laws, nutin will happen to u!!! just like america - if u break a law, u have to face the consequences, except yes s'pore is alot more strict. i've lived in s'pore before and no one really "goes about doing things in fear." and yes, people DO have lives! good ones too! its a fun place to visit as well.

still... im sure if you stayed out of trouble and you knew the laws you won't get in trouble... thats not what i meant to point out... what im sayin is that the punishment is disproportional to the crime...

hhmm i think most of it is ok, its mostly fines. besides, it serves that guy right for throwing that hot spoon at the other guy, he did get burned.

and no, i dont 'live in fear'. i jaywalk and do stupid things like tat all the time. but i dont like to spit in public, thats disgusting! usually old people do that. the only way you get caught spitting is if you spit in front of a police officer. thats really the only way to get caught. and i dont litter cos its disgusting too. people always think this is like a really strict place..haha maybe you should come here and see for yourself.

Hmmm... seems my first post caused alot of fuss... sorry bout that... i really didn't mean to make it come off that way... well i did... but more i thought about it, i was uhm incorrect at my anylization of the country's crime policy... im sure it is a nice place to live and such, but i still hold to my belief that some of the country's punishments are a bit lets say... harsh for throwing a spoon full of hot soup at someone... i mean... 6 months for a not really even minor injury? i think they could have dummed down the punishment, atleast to maybe community service and restitution for any damages that it could have cost the victim... don't you think that 6 months in jail is a bit overkill? i mean thats a good portion of life, and alot happens in 6 months... i just think, that in my opinion they need to rethink their punishments thats all...
