why do ppl say that everytime someone sneezes?

i was watching an episode of the simpsons where bart sold his soul to milhouse.
somewhere along the line, milhouse said that when you sneeze, it means that your soul is trying to escape n saying God bless you crams it back in. so that got me wondering- y do ppl really say that phrase?

and I read online that when you sneez, your heart stops for like .00001 (something like that) second so they say God bless you. :huh: :sleepy:

Maybe it has something to do with the superstition of Yawning. It used to be believed as a person's soul or life force escaping. Also people used to cover their mouths because of this. But Yawning is actually a way to take in more air. So yawning isn't really impolite then.



I don't know about sneezing though.
