Laptop or Desktop?

Im not a heavy computer user or a person who needs like 60gigs and a really fast computer. I need something that will get my college work done.

Even if i had a job, i wouldnt need like 2.6ghz or 60gigs on my computer.

So im thinking about getting a better laptop in the future. Problem is..im afraid of breaking the cd tray which i did to this machine im using right now.....

Anyone know if they sell external cd drives for you laptop and if they do, will i need to be in windows to use it? I was thinking about hooking it up and then partition my drive , format my laptop and install windowsxp pro all over using that external cd drive.

Desktop.

Mostly faster, reliable, and better graphics.

But obviously you can buy a laptop that is sometimes better than a desktop.

But for me, definatley stick to a desktop.

i say go laptop. preferably one from Toshiba. they make good laptops. and then thing about a external usb cd drive. i dont think you can boot from it when your installing a copy of an OS due to the fact that its usb. im not sure about firewire. and it just looks cooler on campus walking around with a laptop.

To answer tea's question. I never take my laptop to college, maybe to work with there, but never set my eyes off of it for more than 5 minutes..then i would keep it in my bookbag.

Second, to answer sang's question....thats what this computer salesman said that i have to have windows to run that cd drive. my best bet is to save up enough money and send it back to fremont , Ca for repairs.

I wish they would built HP stores around the states..

If you want a laptop i suggest you get an apple...some reason they've been getting better.

as for desktops, i dont know now...apple's are getting better all of a sudden.

if your looking for a stable operating system, and a cool computer go apple (like volcom strider said). the dual processor G4's are frickin amazing. but i think apples are for graphics.

the apple laptop are slimmer than pentium/athlon based notebooks and you'll never see the bsod on them.

bsod=blue screen of death

true, apple is more towards graphics...
if your more familiar w/ the windows environment, need mobility, and at the same time power...
i'd say laptops, notebooks fit that category.
