i've recently got earthlink cable on my computer. i've tried networking my sisters computer to the same connection but i cant. i've messed around with the settings on my sisters computer for like hours and i still dont know whats wrong. i cant even ping out of her computer. however, my computer runs fine.

ok from what i understand you cant share 1 static ip address with another computer. i think you have to buy another one. so im looking into programs that can reroute everything so i can share 1 static ip line. if not that im trying to find a way where i can put 2 nics on my computer and run 1 to the modem and another to the lan or something like that.

That's how it should be. I don't know if that's what you wrote in your original post. The whole point of a router is to share an IP (static or dynamic) over as many computers as possible.

Edit: Stupid forums delete extra spaces. What it should be is:

Router -> You
Router -> Your sister
Cable modem -> Router

usually you dont have to worry about the pings cuz windows does it for you. i dont think even the wireless pci card even need to be configured with pings. usually it should work when you connect to the router. the linksys is the best.

requiem is correct. the basic function of a router is to connect two distinct networks. in your case, that would be your local access network (lan) consisting of your two computers connecting to the internet (wan) through the router. a problem could arise however, if you accidently bought a hub instead of a router. while similar in looks, a hub does not have the capabilities that a router has, and only serves as an extension to an existing network.

let me get into detail.

I have Linksys Ethernet cards and a Etherfast Cable/DSL Router with 4 Port Switch.

Cable - Router - My Computer - My Sisters


My computer works fine but my sisters cant connect to the internet. im recieving and sending packets and i can ping out to my router but i cant seem to connect to the internet. I have a Cable connection which i believe is static ip and my computer and my sisters are both set to obtain the IP automatically. I've tried manually configurating them but then my computer cant connect to the internet. anyone know why this is?

Let me detail exactly what you must do.
Connect your cable modem to your router.
Connect your router to your computer.
Connect your router to your sister's computer.
Set both computers to DHCP automatically receive IP address.
Reset your router (unplug/replug).
Reboot both of the computers.
It definitely should work now. All routers are configured to let port 80 through to all computers on the LAN.
Try pinging www.google.com when you're done.

i dont know why they made the router sometimes hard to install. but one time i had to do some weird crap to fix it. this is what i did.

1. unplug everything including the cable modem
2. plug in all the plugs to the router only the LAN connections and the 4 ports
3. then plug in the cable modem
4. after it finishes connecting it should work.

tell me if this works.

youll have to configure your router to emulate your computers mac address. heres how to do it on a linksys router (youll get the point).

to get the mac address:
browser -> router ip -> dhcp -> dhcp client table -> mac address

to clone a mac address:
browser -> router ip -> advanced -> mac address clone

after several trys i've managed to get it working. I still dont know what the problem was but thats not what matter right now.
