Disguise.com's racist halloween masks

Credits: maxazn
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Just when you thought you¡¯d seen the last of the ¡°ching-chong-chinamen¡± caricatures on clothing lines, costume manufacturer Disguise.com recently unveiled their new outfit for Halloween.

They call it, ¡°Kung-Fool.¡±

The costume (left) consists of a black and white (Japanese) kimono, belt, vinyl half-cap, and rubber mask -- a buck-toothed, squinty-eyed caricature donning a headband with the Chinese character for "loser" inscribed. Until yesterday, the company's website ran the following description for the costume (no joke): Hiiiiiiiyaaaaa! Become a master of martial arts over night, or¡¦ well¡¦ maybe not, but have fun wearing the Disguise Kung Fool costume!

Certainly, this type of overt racism, passed off half-heartingly as "humor," is familiar to many Asians. Six months ago, clothing manufacturer Abercrombie and Fitch tried to push their "Wong Brothers Laundry Service" onto young adults and teens, claiming the shirts were "cheeky, irreverent, funny." Unfortunately, they actively chose to overlook that such depictions are blatantly offensive to many who've had to endure them, and indeed, have been used consistently and historically to marginalize an entire community.

More insidious this time, however, is the current attempt to perpetuate these negative stereotypes amongst children. While many of Disguise's costumes offer model cartoon heroes, fictional characters and even infamous celebrities, no other costume singles out for ridicule a community like "Kung-Fool."

Please voice your opposition to the perpetuation of negative Asian stereotypes amongst children at http://petition.yellowworld.org

Thanks,

Achtungbaby

"Art ( 19 years old, from Chicago )

Jesus christ, you yellow hippies should really lighten up. I'm asian myself, and this costume is a far cry from "racial insensitivity". This isn't a propaganda poster nor a slave outfit, its a friggin harmless Halloween costume. Let the kids have their fun and grow up, because you people have yet to do so.

It's interesting...becuz i tried to look at it in a different perspective. I've seen people dress up at hicks and hillbillies wit a blacked out tooth, overalls, straw hat and talk completely uneducated. We, as asians, blacks and others find this funny, but wouldn't that be the same thing? Or maybe you feel this is wrong too. I don't think that the mask is rite, but I do feel of course our views are biased and sometimes we do overreact since we ARE the ones being sterotyped and we of course take it personal. This mask is an outrage...but I dont feel that we should just rush to anger. Teach them about us, dont make them fear us by goin on a rampage.

i personally think dressing up like hicks is disgusting as well. In this case, we are not resorting to anger, what we're doing is signing a petition, politely requesting that they stop their production of this mask. While perhaps individual motives are different, the petition in itself, is a peaceful movement to stop racism in the community.

I'm sorry, but i forgot to add that the petition is a good move, but I live in seattle and there is alot of protests lately from the black community against the Seattle PD and they are blockin traffic and such. I'm just comparing the movement to that. Peaceful and powerful is the way to do it, without disrupting people's lives, and by the way i've signed it.
