Friends show support for Iranian family

More than a dozen supporters of artists Mo Jamal and Shahla Etemadzadeh gathered Wednesday in the couple's Northwest Austin home to tell reporters of their affection for the immigrant family of six that faces deportation to their native Iran.

"The moment they land in Tehran, they'll be in jail," said M.R. Ghanoonparvar, an Iranian American University of Texas professor of Persian and comparative literature. "They will accuse them of being spies. But they are not political."

The family has until Monday to file for a 30-day stay and review of its recent denial of asylum, and to appeal to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

Etemadzadeh said they intend to file the appeals but are waiting to hear from their lawyer.

Kirk Hoffman of the Texas Civil Rights Project said the group "will do everything we can" to assist them. Austin lawyer Sam Haddad said the office of U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, was assisting in the appeal to immigration authorities.

The couple and their four sons fled Iran in 1985 after Etemadzadeh's writer father was jailed. Jamal also angered the government by drawing caricatures of government officials.

The family won asylum in Germany but later left for the United States because of persecution of Iranians. Five years after applying for U.S. asylum, the request was denied. Haddad said the denial gave no reason.
