wat makes a scary movie SCARY?!

i had a discussion wit my bf after watching "the ring" and "event horizon" this past weekend. i already realized long ago dat no scary movie is ever scary anymore. i just dun get scared! which kinda sux, cuz i WANT to get scared. my bf got kinda annoyed cuz i was KINDA laughing during "event horizon" (a sci-fi horror film) and he said i'm never in the mood for scary movies. <-- not true. but i cant just help it cuz the devil/monster/watever the hell the "bad guy" was looked so ridiculous. its sooo NOT scary. "event horizon" was quite gruesome and gory, and its got some pretty disturbing images. but dat does not necessarily equal SCARY. as for "the ring," it wasnt scary. but the original japanese version was scariER. but it still didnt scare me. there were parts when i jumped becuz of SUDDEN movements. but dat ALSO does NOT necessarily mean SCARY. it was A SCARE, but not scaRY.

get wat i'm saying???

alot of wats scary is ur own perception. sooooo in ur perspective, wat makes a horror/scary movie SCARY?!??!!?!

yeah, it's hard to get scared by movies. It's just all visual and sounds...it's hard to get scared that way.

What makes something scary is really sudden sounds with action in a movie, i can't think of somethign right now in movies, but in resident evil 2 when licker bashes through the mirror, ahhh, that was scary. Something really sudden. And if the movie can establish that feeling of "it's coming to get me", that makes it scary as well.

Or, if they can make it really really distrubing that makes it scary too. That's hard to do now cause we're all so desensitized i think.

scary is when its all quiet and the person is just walking quietly and slowly and you know there is something there...aah the suspense! then suddenly somethin jumps out and gives you a heart attack!!

yea disturbing movies like exorcist are scary too

scary games : resident evil [only sometimes] and Silent hill [80% of the time!!]

i remember i was playing resident evil once and i was running past some windows in an old mansion, then suddenly crows burst in and start attaking me! the burst in part was like whoa !@#@!!

i definitely agree wit u dat we're all desensitized. which kinda sux for me...

sudden sounds doesnt necessarily mean SCARY..... or does it?? and disturbing isn't really scary either.... or is it? read my previous post.

i agree.
a study was conducted that proved that a horror movie with no music or sound effects at all had the same effects on the viewer as if they watching an educational show. the newer horror films are directed alot better and the plot is much more than blood and monsters. for example, the ring. the ring wasn't about the monster. it was more about the plot that got the viewers freaked out. and the things you dont even notice in the movie change your mood. in the movie "ring" the director used alot of shading and dark scenes in the movie. did you notice that most of the day scenes were dark/foggy/rainy in the movie. you may have not noticed but what this does is it sets up the "scary" mood for the viewer.

actually the gray/gloomy/rainy day was the one thing i noticed first. and i was wondering where the story took place and i guessed seattle becuz 1) lots of rain, 2) which city rains alot and have tall buildings?

newayz, i think i'm over-analyzing this "scary" stuff....
but i agree wit u dat it was more the plot dat got people freaked out.

still..... i'm not satisfied wit these answers. like i said before, i think i'm over-analyzing this..... oh well. thanks tho!

i really liked the movie that supposedly killed the people who watch it in the ring. i love the random/disturbing images. thats what i like in movies, like the shining, the ring, exorcist, the cell

true.. the randomness was kinda odd and freaky in a way... it was like a riddle dat u had to put it all together. it was neat!
