[spyshots]BMW 6-Series

These are the latest photos of the new BMW 6-Series coupe, now seen with less disguising of its sleek profile and rakish lines - it looks a worthy successor to the upmarket and beautiful '70s 3.0 CSi and the later 6-Series coupes that were discontinued in 1989. BMW has learnt from its mistake with the 8-Series, which was too big and too unsporting, and gone back to making a purist's driving machine based on the next-generation 5-Series saloon platform. It will at last allow BMW to offer a serious alternative to the Maserati Coupe, the Jaguar XK8, the Porsche 911 and assorted sporting Mercedes.

Designated E63, this coupe model is likely to be launched officially early next year, and an E64 convertible model is tipped to follow a year later. Also said to be on the cards is a very limited-edition stripped-out, lightweight CSL version, in the vein of the so-called 'Batmobile' racer from the '70s. The original '70s CSL was stripped out and festooned with spoilers, and is now highly collectable. The 21st century version is believed be some time off yet.

Two V8 engines are thought to be on offer: BMW's 270 bhp 3.5-litre and the 340 bhp 4.5-litre, and of course, there will be a hot M version, which could deliver over to 450 bhp - opinion is divided as to whether this will be a tuned V8 or a V10 engine. The 231 bhp 3.0-litre straight-six will also be available, and don't rule out diesel versions, either. The transmission systems will be a six-speed manual or six-speed Steptronic sequential; the M6 will get the sportier SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) as used in the current M3. Expect the i-Drive control system, as well, albeit with modifications compared to the criticised 7-Series system designed to make it more user-friendly.

We can't see the finer details of the styling yet, but the 6-Series is thought to have been influenced by the Z9 concept car shown at 2000's Frankfurt Motor Show. That means a long curved nose, large double headlights, a shark-like grille, gill-like air intakes in the front wings and huge wheels of 18- or 19 inches in diameter. Sadly, it won't have the Z9's gullwing doors.

not diggin tha style.. lookz nuthiin how a bimmer should look..

lol, you judge things too much by style. I understand that looks do play a certain factor in things, but to have a car that looks good but not have the balls to back it up... thats rice. Kind of like the prelude, GSR's, and RSX's.

or what? It's a nice looking car, but overall its still slow. The engine has so much potential but the factory fucked it p. Honestly think about this... IF I-VTEC is so much better than normal VTEC, why do S2000's' and NSX's still have VTEC?
