[spyshots]BMW 1-Series

At the launch of the MINI Cooper S earlier this year, BMW Chief Executive Helmut Panke spoke of growing demand for premium small cars and confirmed BMW's intention to enter the so-called 'Golf sector'. He stressed that any small BMW would be clearly different from the MINI, and that the 1-Series 'will pick up where BMW left off with the 1502, 1602 and 2002.' That's small but sporting, then.

To create further distance from the MINI range, the 1-Series is rear-wheel drive, and will not share any engines with the MINI when it is launched in 2004. It will come with a choice of four-cylinder VALVETRONIC units developed at BMW's Hams Hall facility in England, probably including the longitudinally-mounted 1.8-litre unit fitted to the CS1 concept car. There will also be a hot M-Sport model - called M1, of course - tipped to have a 2.0-litre, 240 bhp engine, a less powerful but still sporting turbocharged version, and diesel models.

It's too early to tell just how much influence the CS1 concept has had on the 1-Series design, but these photos show that it is angular in shape, with deep character curves, and it is likely to have a front end similar to that of the new Z4 roadster. Ultimately, the 1-Series range could include four-wheel-drive models, and insiders also hint at a coupe, probably to be badged 2-Series. Where this will leave the 3-Series Compact and Coupe is uncertain, but the Compact hatchback may not be directly replaced, enabling BMW to push the 3-Series range further upmarket.

Whys that wrong? BMW's made alot of small cars.. liek the BMW 2002 and the 2002ti(fuel injected). how about the 325i and 325ti.
Mercedes made a hatchback and it is successful. now.. making alot of SUV's.. thats wrong. In Europe, All the european car companies you see in the states sell alot of small hatchbacks in Europe.

...America... everything has to be big and powerful to impress alot of people.

How did you get the Tiburon front design? i see no resemblance. It looks more like a Ford Escort European edition.

europe needs small economical cars cuz roads are small and gas is 5 bucks a gallon.

haha... well... im guessing the aesthetics of the car will be much improved when it actualy comes out... i mean the cars still in developement... so don't look too harshly at it... it has potential... im guessin its gonna be like Vw's Golf series, GTi, VR6... i love both those cars... so we'll see how BMW pulls off what VW did so well in the Golf...

Not only do they sip gas and the roads are small, they look cool..

If you read Max Power magazine UK Edition,, they have like nice looking modified Peugeot 206, Hyundai Accent, Opel Astra,, Fiat Punto.. they all go like 10 seconds 0-62, have have like 90 hP, but they never talk about how fast they go.. its all about style.. and Europe wins the Sub compact car market. Here in America, People complain ho wmuch horsepower something have or if its too small. i'm just sick of it..

I'm kind of glad that the European giants are creating more small cars for teh American market.

and if you think of it.. the roads are getting smaller when Immigrants like us come to the US and fill the roads.

your still talking about the same europe that makes the majority of the worlds fastest supercars, right?

your still right, in a way. the majority of the imports arriving here from europe are still relatively large cars. the smallest i can think of right now are the coopers, golfs, gti's and some others.
