Has Microsoft been taking advantage of consumers?
pretty damn straight foward article
http://www.designtechnica.com/artic...ead&order=1
...i personally like monoplies. monoplies werent monoplies from the beginning but became because of superior products. and like everything, it takes time to improve upon the operating system, moreso because the operating system is the most complex software that a home computer will have to run. even little standalone programs arent perfect the instant they come out; bugs are ironed out, security holes patched, and reability increased through newer releases. with that said, the operating system, with hundreds, or perhaps even to the thousands, of individual programs would no where be perfect in the first release, but gradually through upgrades.
and this makes perfect sense, when you look at alternative operating systems. linux, even with the largest development support base, and os warp, backed by the largest computer company (ibm), still are far from perfect and newer releases follow, with the linux kernel (core os program) even more frequently than microsoft's windows.
plus. though the article may have some merits, it is inaccurate. as stated "Each year you have been upgrading an incomplete operating system, old code that has been reworked and candied up so it looks and performs just a little better with each new release." no, its not always old code that have been recycled through a new release. from dos6 to win3, from win3.11 to 95, from 95 to 98, and finally from nt4 to 2k, they were all code reworked from scratch.
like i said, maybe my views are biased, since i have a personal liking for monoplies, even though it is harmful for the general consumer at large (including me). but to me, monoplies are established companies who have already proven themselves to be capable of producing superior products. ofcouse, people may say that microsoft's approach in their creation of windows wasnt all too original and only a copy cat of mac os. to this, i counter by saying that mac os is a copy cat of the xerox os, which was the first operating system to be based on x-windows and a mouse (also invented by xerox).
I don't even have to read that article to say YES. It's been said again and again but here it goes again...Mr. Gates is the devil :) lols

Practically everybody has microsoft because it's been around for a long while and everybody is comfortable with it cuz it works. of course Microsoft's been taking advantage.
