well i dont kno much about google but a past marketer that was kickin butt was Voodoo. i personally had a voodoo video card as many alrdy kno. but do 2 poor marketin they died. google seems 2 be one of the best search engines out there but a small flaw will bring an enterprise down.

Google spreads by word of mouth, and very fast. 3dfx didn't have that kind of marketing.

thus marketing doesnt matter.

- once every month from about the 20th to 28th, Google updates its entire index of web sites - that is Google Dance.
- reason is for example blog pages such as xanga are always updated.

- you guys know there are 8 servers to Google? if you've been a keen Google fan you'll know. ;)

google dance is when google spiders deep crawl, otherwise, google updates almost at a daily basis. and its 8 load balancing regional datacenters, not servers. eight servers would no way be able to handle the tremendous amounts of hits google gets, its more around 10,000+ whiteboxes, all running linux. and did you know that they have a zero employee turnover rate? heh, im a google fan myself, as you can see.

Google does use advertising. In fact, they have been lauded for having one of the most effective advertising methods on the net. They use a "search relevant" advertising methology, where the advertisements that show on the results page are all relevant to what is searched. For example, if one searches for "stock market", you may see banners for TD Waterhouse perched above the results.
