Virus taking up bandwidth on Internet

I was wondering why the Internet was so slow yesterday. I kept trying to get onto this board but no luck. It wasn't only this board but other areas as well...

But then I read this... it came out this morning...:

Virus overwhelms Internet, slows traffic

Could this be the reason why this happened?

yup. it was caused by a worm exploiting a vulnerability in microsoft sql 2000 servers. a code red virus dejavu, which also targeted ms servers back in 2001. our server was fine (running on redhat linux) but our network provider (globalcompass) was affected by the ddos effects of the worm as it replicated itself throughout the internet. started around 12 midnight jan 25 eastern time, but everythings clearing up now.

at one point, up to 20 percent of the web was unreachable globally. korea was hit hardest, with all of the web virtually becoming inaccessible. heres some graphs:

as for major united states network carriers, uunet and internap were hit hardest respectively, with uunet being down for more than 4 hours.

all us backbones providers suffered major packet loss (XX%):

haha whatever you say boss.

except that theres one problem. this graph says otherwise. less than one percent of the norm is unreachable globally as of 10:30 est.

next time, take the time to read everything, especially if youre about to come up with such a brilliant statement like you just did. all you had to do was refer to the previous graphs and you would have realized that the worm was receding.

and sysadmins arent as incompetent as you think they are. they may be lazy and a bit behind in patching vulnerabilities to their systems, but they do respond quite promptly when hit by something to this degree.
