ACT and SAT to No Longer Flag Scores of Disabled Students

The College Board and the makers of the ACT have announced that they will no longer flag SAT and ACT scores of disabled students who require extra time to take the exam.

The new ACT policy goes into effect September 27, 2003. The SAT policy will be effective as of October 1, 2003. Since the College Board also administers the PSAT and Advanced Placement exams, the new policy will also apply to those exams.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, about 2 percent of the two million high school students who take the SAT every year are granted extra time to take the exam – four and a half hours instead of the usual three. The majority of test takers who receive additional time are learning disabled, typically with attention deficit disorder or dyslexia.

Those score reports are flagged as "nonstandard administration."

The new policies are seen as a victory for advocates for the disabled, who viewed the practice of flagging as discriminatory.
