Just One Tree

A young man was concerned about his future and confused about which direction to take. He sat quietly on a park bench, watching squirrels scamper among the trees. SUddenly, a squirrel jumped from one high tree to another, aiming for a limb so far out of reach that the leap looked like sheer suicide. Though the squirrel missed its mark, it landed safely, and seemingly unconcerned, on a branch several feet below. The squirrel then scampered upward to its original goal, and all was well.

An old man was sitting on the other end of the bench. "Funny thing," he remarked, "I've seen hundreds of 'em jump like that. A lot of 'em miss, but I've never seen any hurt in trying." Then the man chuckled and added, "I guess they've got to risk something if they don't want to spend their lives in just one tree"

The young man thought,
A squirrel takes a chance - don't I have as much nerve as a squirrel? He made up his mind in that moment to take the risk he had been considering, and sure enough, he landed safer and higher than he had dared to imagine.
