Debate

I'm up for some online debating, not necessarily on important topics or with extremely difficult opponents, just some stuff for fun. Like the kinds that used to go on here.
That good stuff, you know, like big egos, superfluous anger, people taking the internet too seriously.

Any suggestions on sites where I can do this?

War in Iraq: Blood for Oil? True Or False?

i havent had time to really follow up on whats going on out there currently, but i would like to hear some opinions. i'll either agree or disagree, but i guess its a good start for a debate. political stuff are always controversial.

so what y'all think?

Posted by Alchemist on 08-04-2005 04:49 AM:

No no no, I'm talking about some other websites where I can do this. I'm not looking to do this here because it's not gonna work.

Hmm I guess it's worth a try.

Posted by PsychoSnowman on 08-15-2005 02:08 AM:

yeah, doesn't work on soompi at all. In fact, my escapades on soompi made me dislike that place more than my prejudice dictated previously. Soompi sucks, and so do the people. I thought they would be smarter than that since a lot of them are grown now.

Wait, what was your username there? I haven't found any threads to start an argument yet.

Posted by Alchemist on 08-15-2005 06:01 AM:

Remember when we almost had that war with soompi? But then the bleeding heart hippies didn't want to start anything.

Posted by PsychoSnowman on 08-15-2005 08:14 AM:

psychosnowman, there were not any arguments, it was in a big bang theory thread, but they were all too ignorant of it to have even a conversation about it. It's all:

"i heard the big bang theory was disproved"

"i'm more of a fan of the pulsation theory" (definately a made up name, though i know what they are talking about)

"deposits of hydrogen, helium, and some lithium prove big bang"

"sounds like something scientists didn't understand so they just guess and tell kids that"

"this topic has been discussed to death all ready"

"personally, i think the big bang happened"

"sounds far fetched to me"

"i think the answer lies in string theory"

the topic never even started, but they're all like "we've talked this topic to death, it's not half-assed, we've just talked about it all before." And, there's 9 pages in that topic haha. No one knows anything about teh big bang there, two guys think they do and talk a little about it but they do not seem like they really know anything at all. It's all he said, she said with anonymous scientist mentions.

It honestly annoys me to see these people judge a theory they know nothing about. It does sound stupid, but that's when you don't know anything about it. I used to think it was a little funny, but after reading a book on it, it's interesting and clean cut theory.

Their answer to why they do not talk about specifics was replied by one of the two guys who says they know about it, "you have to look in the mathematics," that's bs, if you understood it you could talk about it.

I was expecting conversation about the mechanics of the big bang, and if it were probable and feasible. Talk about multiverses, and black hole-big bang connections, origins of universes, a limiting size of the universe, how big the begining point of the universe was, how many dimensions it had, talk about hyperspace, etc., not a thread filled with "well i believe". Other topics i have been in yielded no result either. It annoys me too much to be part of any conversation on thath site.

soompi war though haha, that was funny.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to find your thread, there was all this crap there about the search function not being available.

What if we started our own topic and debated it with each other somewhat seriously? Do you think other people would join in then? I'd like to start up another of those good old fashioned abortion or gun control debates. But if they would go on to say the big bang theory was talked to death then what chance do these two have?

Aha! I've got it! Mr. Psychosnowman, I invite you to join me in what might possibly be the only quasi-serious debate on soompi. (Of course this invitation is open to everyone as well, I just felt like addressing someone)

This is the plan:
A topic shall be introduced in order to gain a "this topic has been discussed to death all ready" after that quote has been witnessed the debate will start. This way we'll actually get a discussion going about why, and if, the topic is dead.

Posted by PsychoSnowman on 08-24-2005 06:01 AM:

excellent, i'm in.

The big bang theory topic is under philosophy and religion, it's probably on the second page.

gogogogogo

Ok I found the thread:
http://soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=371765

I'm not sure if I want to do it on this one though. There's all this stuff you gotta read. And then you also have to deal with the tangents and secants and stuff.
I really want to participate in this discussion and there is the risk of the debate dipping into the subject itself. This kind of science isn't really my strong point. I haven't taken the courses or read the stuff that's been around. I also slept though most of phyisics...yeah.

What do you suggest? Do we go on this one or start another?

Posted by PsychoSnowman on 08-24-2005 08:31 AM:

definately start a new topic, i just read two books on string theory and am finding it hard to think outside of that theory anyways. Also, it's much too large of a topic.

I suggest a new topic, but what? hmm, i'll try and be on aim and we can discuss it, or if you got an idea then oil the gears sir.
