What defines a true friend?

A wise man once said that if you have about 3 good friends by the end of your life, you've lived a good life.

What defines a true friend?

Many often mistake 'acquaintances' as true friends.
sit down for a moment and think of all your "friends"....
can you honestly say that they are your "friends"...?

i don know my best friends are soo nice and they eat lunch wit me and everything i can total relate to them i think a true friend is someone who you can trust, not be afraid to speak your mind infront of them, and they always cheer you up well thats wat my friends do

someone who you can totally trust, can count on, and someone that really cares for you~

these are sum qualities that a true frend wut hav, but wudn't necessarily define a frend; cuz like Flaming_June sed, u can't realli "define" a true frend

caring
compassionate
understanding

for one thing, a true friend shouldn't be duplicitous or back-stabbing

How about a friend who engages in conversation?
One who calls semi-often, inviting the other to go out?
What about a friendly IM or two on AIM with some observations about something intellectual?

Nah, it seems I ask too much. I'll live my life with one friend who meets that standard.

6. sometime to talk to, express ur mind, if an issue comes up..

well thats my definition of a friend, a true friend woud express those 6 #s more.

oh yeah, and heres a scenario:
if ur dying, get shot or whatever, and ur friend is next to you... u have a family to take care of, but who can take care of it when ur dead. if hes a true friend, he'll accept ur wish, and try his best to make everything work out, raise the kids.. etc

but how could u tell who's a friend... ?

School friends
outsidefriends

sometyms they tell u that there yo best friends but is just for the mean tym... life ish very confusing ...

I have a friend who meets those standards, it's pretty cool.

a true friend is there through thick and thin. Like if you get into a fight with a good friend (well u thought they were ur good friend) but u couldnt seem to make up afterwards they werent a true friend. But a true friend is the one who if u get in a fight, argue, and then work things out and forget about it. Thats what I think then of course all the other stuff people said to hehe

a true friend is someone who you can trust and talk to about almost everything they are always there for you even if you havent seen eachother for a while if something happens they'll be there...they prolly should have their own opinions too like i wouldnt want my frends to just agree with everything i say or do i want them to tell me the truth..i only have 2 really good friends and its more of a mutual thing where if someone has a problem or anything we are there to do our best at helping sorry if dat was confusing or if i repeated myself
