big brother

surveillance cameras …

saying that they will be installed on local streets would
they be there for our protection or a violation of our privacy?

Posted by PsychoSnowman on 01-03-2003 04:14 AM:

of course it's a violation of privacy.

Obviously, however, they weren't installed to violate anyone's personal privacy. They are meant for protection, and they serve that purpose.

I think it's unfortunate, however, that we are all to willing to accept whatever measure they can in order to return to the blissful days of pre-911 security.

I would decry the Homeland Security department as consolidation of the worst kind, but then again I want to feel safe, and so do the others around me.

Then again, neither the FBI nor the CIA-the top two intelligence gathering agencies targeted this past year as the most 'ineffective'- fall under the Homeland Security Department's umbrella.

i think intent is a terrible standard to go by. Whatever the intent, it's effectually violating privacy then.

i'm sorry but what can one be doing in a "local street" that would cause it to be a "violation of privacy"?

yeah, that is actually a good point, i was thinking someone would bring it up. Even though we're in a public place, being spied on by the government is still seen as a violation of privacy if you ask me. Not the mere act of taping or viewing, but the act that follows when they look at it, the possible investigation into your identity, what you were doing and the like. If it gets to a point where there's a "log" for every person's actions in any public place they've ever been, i think that'd be a violating. But, it IS a public place true.

Here's another quote to inspire or something. Yeah i'm not much a quote dropper i just feel like it right now:

"Liberty is dangerous; but, it's the safest thing we have." -Emerson Forsdick

no, you'll be able to create a database of people and facial recognition or whatever device they could implement to identify you. They could track your actions, and everyone elses. Whoever is they, they'd konw what you were doing whenver they wanted if they really want. Furthermore, they can use it to catch refugees and the like, like in Enemy of the State, they track that guy everywhere. Refer to my other post for more i think, maybe this is just a repeat haha i think there is more in the other post.

whenever i think of national security and the resolution for LD this yr i think of that movie *shudders* i hope the govt won't go as far as to implement cameras in everyone's houses but cameras on the streets is a good step towards that.
