is it neccessary for college?
laptops are handy for taking notes (way faster than writing, no?)
my only reasons for favoring the minitower over a laptop are that it is cheaper (more powerful for the same budget), less apt to get stolen, and is more easily upgradeable in terms of cards, ram, hard drives, etc. You can sense that I'm bringing a minitower to campus in the fall
Check if your school supports wireless internet access, which is a plus for notebook users

the majority of kids I know with laptops at universities don't really use their computers for taking notes, but if you travel a lot it's pretty nice to have with you.
