Pokeman: Anime or Not Anime why is there a question?
Ok, i asked this in another thread somewhere a while back and I was genuinely interested in reading a response.
The statement that piqued my interest was:
Pokeman is not anime
Im not a fan of pokeman but i've heard millions of geeky little fanboys say this and its annoying me. For once i'd like to hear legitimate reasons why it should not be included in the anime category. First off, how do you define anime? (What are the limits to the definition, standards, why those limits are good)
And, why does pokeman not fit into that definition.

mmmmk, so anime is anything w/o gay things.
well then, alot of things can be called anime then, i think you should try a more concise standard.
under your standard these can be considered anime:
Bugs Buggy
Scooby Doo (well.. )
Powepuff Girls (hmm...0.o)
Space Ghost (yea that fool is cool)
Straight porn
Masturbation porn
haha i ran outta cartoons to list

Sure it is.
I consider all animated tv series in Japan anime. Sure, there are further classifications of what types of anime there are (shoujo, bishonen, whatever, etc.) but when people think of animation in japan, it's always called anime. Thats because it originated there, and thus it's a term used to describe that animation, not any other country. Think about it, do we ever hear japanese people speaking of their animated tv shows in regards to them as "cartoons" or "animated tv shows?" No, we don't. Thats because it's they synonymous term for cartoon, but it comes off with connotations much more towards it culturally (as in only japanese animation is anime). Hence, when people refer to "anime" especially japanese people in their own country everyone knows exactly what they are talking about...japanese animated series/movies. People try and make it much more pandemic than it actually is. It's for japanese animation, not american stuff.
Anime is a japanese word, so if another culture in asia uses it then i'm sure it came from japan...though i am unsure. Because then it could be used to describe just asian animation in general. But i still think it means more towards asian style of animation, especially in terms of japanese in style. In short, American animation is NOT anime
Pokemon, coming from japan is anime. People in japan call it anime, we call it anime. It's only the few people that confuse mass hype and popularity to somehow make genuine anime not anime anymore, which is absurd. Anime isn't about it being "underground" or whatever, it's about it origins. In japan, pokemon is a very popular "anime." There's really not that big of a question of it. It is. And not just because they say it is, though thats a big reason...but for the reasons i've outlined.
-edit- Just thought of this after reading the other posts. Haha, anyway...Japan is one of the few cultures that will animate what most cultures would film in real life. That is the essence of it. A culture so enveloped in animation that they give their new "higher animation" (not implying it's better, i'll explain) a name called anime. Not really higher, but more of a distinction, an ARTFORM. And on the gay thing, yes they animate gay things all the time. If i recall properly, the character Hakura (is that it?) from Sailor Moon S (i think) and sailor neptune were actually sexually interested in each other. That and the countless featureless nudity sequences (not just the transformations, i'm thinking in particular of this nude army of the queen or something that came later in the series) that were featured in that show, and others. Anyway, another type of anime is hentai and that showcases erotic animated things, including gay instances.
I know you were using gay as in stupid, but just because pokemon is stupid doesn't make it not anime. In fact, it doesn't do anything to it. It's not like music, where if a punk rock artist comes out with a record and it becomes incredibly popular and then we call it "pop." Thats entirely different. But then again, even on that level if we go back to what it is we realize it's pop but then subdivided under that we know it is in fact punk rock even though the hardcores deny it. All right, i'm babbling. Lata.

i dunno pokemon is under the label, "anime" but i think real anime has a good story in it. Dragonball has good action and fighting scenes but the story is very flawed. i mean to me a good series was Love Hina. i love that show.

I agree with you completely SNoman. Hell, even the people in Japan call it anime or rather animation, so why don't fanboys take it from the "mother country."

david and victor or completely correct.
anime is just a label. There's no deeper meaning to it, there shouldn't be a question of authenticity and being true anime.... that's just for loser fanboys.
