The bottom one is not a triangle. The angles of the two smaller triangles are different.

its pretty simple... the red triangle has a bigger height, so it can fit those l shaped piece within that height when its on the bottom. but when u move that red triangle, and move the green triangle down, the green triangle is shorter, so it cant fit those pieces.
haha. this was on my geometry test about 3 years ago!!

that is mind boggling. i can onli see that the green triangle is smaller than the red portion where it is in the 2nd pic. (duz that make sense?)
