Morals and Religion

What a friend of mine believes: If there was no religion, there would be no morals. The roots of morality are always traced back to religion. Even if a person has no belief in God, that person's morals will come from the influence of those that are religious. (That's his main point, there was more, but I'm not too good with my words... bah ^^)

What are your thoughts on that?

I don't agree with that statement. I think morality can be rationalized externally to religion.
If a person was born and never followed a religion or was raised in an environment where there was religion., they could have a system of morals.

I think what your friend meant (I'm kinda reaching here) is that w/out God there would be no morality. Throughout history it's always been acknowledged that killing, rape, theft was a bad thing, an immoral thing to do. And the question is that where do we get this standard of morality (true standards of morality change, but for the most part they remain the same). There must be some absolute truth in order for morality to appear. Not so much religion, cause we all know that at one point or another "religion" has corrupted and destroyed many things, in immoral ways. This absolute truth that has endured throughout time has to come from somewhere.

i haven't read this thread yet, but on the subject.

I hate it when people when realizing i'm atheist ask the most ignorant thing i've ever heard "why don't you just sin all the time then? you don't believe in god."

Bah, religion and morals aren't dependant on each other.

YES another atheist! They're hard to find, especially I notice on these boards. Or maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Anyway, I think morals came before religious through sense. I mean seriously, if you just kept killing people, eventually the human race would die out. I think some genius primate figured that out and BAM we have a moral.
OK so that's a little whack but you get the idea.

All religions have a figure who is higher than themselves. Let's take this into consideration. Since it is all back to their roots of religion which gives them their morals. How has the higher figure effected their lives? Have they literally came down and told them something? No, it was influenced out of them trying to find a reason for life. They want to make themselves feel better about dying, someone who is dead, etc... I personally believe that God or no God, you get one chance in this life... May as well make it your best.
