we're asian, so we know chinese

aight i was at Models and i was standing by the entrance and a family walks in and the mother was like "ANDREW! ANDREW! COME HERE! CAN'T YOUR HEAR ME, AM I TALKING CHINESE?", and then sunddenly another little kid starts wispering at his mom looking and pointing at me... and then the mom looks at me and said "oops" and starts laughing

then i went 2 some award thingy... i donno wut it was, but this guy was talking with his dad and he was like "r there andy chinese and indian guys here? they usually win this stuff" and the kid behind me was like "dad the guy infront of u is chinese, just look at him"

arg wtf, i don't even look chinese, i'm just sick of people who think that all asian people r chinese or japanese

lol, just people and their low education having selves..cant even be respectable to other people..people like that in my school..their like..oh u go out wit dat chinese boi?! im like..uh..hes half filipino..not chinese, lol..ignorance i guess..but maybe they dont look at it like that

i don't have a problem with it at all. im chinese and i get mistaken for other nationailities as much as i mistake certain types of white people for other types.

I think it's just that most non-asians can't tell the difference.

like a few of my old HS friends couldn't tell the difference between viet, chinese, korean and even philipino just by looking at the person. but because I'm asian I can, most of the time, figure out their specific asian decent.

so I think it's just a lack of exposure.

That is what i was about to say. People never guess that i am pakistani, and not indian. There have been a handful in my entire life, and most of that handful are people who are south asian themselves. I do not make a big deal about it though, it is an understandable conclusion they could have come to. After i get it right, she is like "people always confuse my ethnicity, it's so annoying." Funny...it is ok for her to guess my ethnicity wrong, but then once the tables are turned on her she is somehow unique to everything and is warranted the opportunity to be offended. I do not think she should have been offended, given the fact that she just messed up herself.

She could have been more understanding, we all can be. I was skimming (not reading) other posts in here, and i saw words like ignorance. The best way to educate them is to tell them what you are, not just get offended and complain on a forum. Honestly, how is one supposed to know, living in america? Is there really so much of an asian presence here that it is simply absurd that someone mistakes you for something other than what you are? and, then that becomes grounds to be offended...you do not have to be.

Put yourself in other's positions. East asians are not the only people confused for other ethnicities.

i completly understand wut ur saying..if someone asks u and they really dont know and their not being like...stupid about it..then yea, no need to get all worked up..but then theres the other people that even if theykno the ethnicity (im using my bf as an example) .. they still call him a chinese boy and stuff, lol, not that it bothers him, but to some people it might and i dont blame em..it could be annoying to some people, and those kind of people I think are the ignorant ones

the ones that psychosnowman and some others are talking about are just some typical mistakes.. but the one in AZN Pinoy Boy, that lady spoke to him in Chinese without even asking if he was chinese or not. this happened to me several times.. like at a chinese buffet, they just speak to me, out of nowhere, in chinese and i was like, sorry i dont speak your language.. he told me, "you look asian, are you not chinese?" i was like.. no sir, i'm korean.. and because i look am asian does not categorize me as a chinese person. this isnt the only time.. i was walking around the mall once and some chinese family came up to me asking for directoins i guess.. they assumed i was chinese and kept going at me in chinese.. they never gave me a chance to tell them that i wasnt chinese.. it's as if the majority of the chinese think that most asians are chinese here in the US. Chinese may be the majority for the asian population, but Chinese isnt the only asians here.. it would be nice if they asked what ethnic group i belong in before they start talking in their language..

Perhaps some of those people do not speak english and think they might have a better chance of finding someone who speaks Chinese if they find a person who looks East Asian.

that is a typical mistake i think as well. People talk to me in hindi, tamil, or somethign without asking. And, i just take it as a mistake, i mean i can see why they thought i was indian...or, hoped. I do not think that just because they may talk to you in chinese, they do not think that chinese are the only asians. They just came to the wrong conclusion, and the way they acted on their assumption might make it look worse, but it is not so grave of a mistake if they just talk to you in their language. Put yourself in their situation, some situations i mean, if you are a foreigner with no idea how to get somewhere, and you see an asian and ask them for directions in chinese becacuse you do not speak english...i mean it is not like they are thinking "you better be chinese", they are just hoping. And, if you did happen to speak chinese, then you can help them find their way. If not, then oh well. They probably know that chinese are not the only sort of asians in america.

But, i suppose asking beforehand would be a more optimal way to go about it. Not everyone thinks so much before they ask. If they do not know you are not chinese, kindly correct them. I think that the offendees are the ones that categorize themselves as "asian = chinese" moreso than the offenders do so. But, i am sure there are cases where the opposite is true.

that's true too, but in my cases.. they spoke to me in pretty fluent english after i corrected them..

And, i am offended that you think asian means only east asian (at least in this context, what i mean is that people do not go up to a south asian and assume they are chinese or japanese, they think they are indian or something).

same haha happens all the time. i jus say i dont know the language and they go what?? u dont know?? isnt it your race??

in singapore [where i am, if u know where] is mostly chinese ppl and most of them dont know anything about other races. i jus think of it as an opportunity to educate one more person about indian languages and races haha

but bein asian i get confused about asians too, japanese and koreans, chinese and taiwanese, indonesian and malaysian, is hard to tell sometimes. so u cant blame them for not knowing. unless the person has that distinct [example japanese: sharp nose, strong cheekbones, small eyes, good fashion sense haha] look, it is hard to tell for me.

i don't, maybe i came out that way, i hold south asia as "asian people" but u can tell the difference easily between a chinese/japanese person then a south asian person

Yes, South Asians are not to be excluded from the "Asians" label. On a similar note to the subject of this thread, not all South Asians are Indian, and they're misclassified similarly to CJK-etc. people. But a CJK-etc. looks different from a Bangladeshi-Indian-Pakistani-etc., ethnically speaking. And by "ethnic," I don't mean ethnic code 3 (Asian/Pacific Islander) on the ACT. By that, I mean that a person of South Asian descent born in China would be of Chinese nationality, but ethnically, he is South Asian (e.g., Pakistani).

I think that the reinforcement of "Asian" labeling exclusively on East Asian people is due largely in part to their inaccurate portrayal in the media. Take Rush Hour, for example. Chris Tucker refers to the Chinese as "you Asians." The same thing goes for labeling almost all South Asian people in the media as Indians, although they belong to Asia (until Rand McNally decides to make South Asia a separate continent). An appropriate example for this is Apu from The Simpsons. I imagine that many people instinctively classify him as an Indian just because he has a brown skin tone and has a quasi-South Asian accent when speaking English.

Yes, a large part of this is due to ignorance. Perhaps people just do not know that Asia is not one big fucking melting pot from where "yall gonna learn Chinese" [Jin, Learn Chinese]. However, from what I've experienced, many people seem to exhibit racist dispositions or simply, irrationality through their remarks
