"NEW YORK, June 9 – Sibling rivalry is never easy. Take Louis Vuitton's famous Epi leather goods, for instance. While the bags, shoes and fashions from the house's other lines have been bathing in the limelight, Epi—with its trademark grainy finish, bright colors and classic silhouettes—has played the role of staid, reliable breadwinner.

That’s about to change this fall. Under the direction of Marc Jacobs, and spurred on by new advances in tanning techniques, the Vuitton design team has given the line a head-turning makeover. Popular shapes have been reengineered in a soft, matte-finished leather, their bright colors replaced by more modern hues like dark brown Moka or citrus Mandarine, while trendy new additions include the Dhanura yoga bag, complete with quilted monogram logo mat. Even some of the company's most enduring designs, like the Noé bucket drawstring bag, will now be available only in the "new Epi" format. Retail prices will range from about $800 for the Noé to $1,300 for the Dhanura.

Luxury goods purists, however, need not fear: some classic suitcases and knapsacks will still be made in the stiffer skins. And just so no one feels left out, Vuitton is also launching a new men’s line called Utah, that includes wallets and bags made in a supple grained calfskin, made even more mouthwatering by labor intensive hand-finishing (enhanced leather grain, top-stitching, burnished brass hardware). It’s a fall haul worth waiting for.
