nothing personal but it doesnt take a rocket science to learn html. infact, its *very* easy and straight forward. i remember back in the day when i was still in the middle of eigth grade just coming to america without much friends or a computer. so i used to hang out in a college library after school where i could surf and use the internet. it was one of those days that i stumbled upon w3c where i learned html 4.01 in one day and proceeded in making a search portal the following day.

my point? html is *very* easy and nothing to be proud of. sure, there were those days in the early days of the internet when anyone who knew html were thought to be genius and could land a 100grand-a-year job easily. but that was back in 1995. unfortunately, this year is 2002.

if you're meaning high school cpp, you're only going to touch command prompt (ms-dos) based programs. nothing visual.

jusun i am just starting 9nth grade but i have known html for three years, and im not gonna throw myself a party for knowing html but its something to know. Also, there are some(not many) parts of html that are a little bit hard. i.e:complex table commands and some parts of div ids can be hard at some times. i dont consider myself a rocket scientist so thanks.

Posted by micron on 07-20-2002 12:37 AM:

complex table commands and div ids? haha, 'id's arent part of html but css. and complex table commands? thats the first.

obviously you havent heard of the world wide web consortium (hence w3c), the organization that standardizes sgml and other web oriented languages. go read their specifications.

html 4.01 as you wouldnt have to know xhtml unless you want to learn xml. css for separation of presentation and content. a general tip, learning straight from the source is always the best way. so learn your html from w3c for a change. and im also saying this because you asked seung to teach you php, when the php developers have already a official manual free for everyone to use at their site (php.net).

actually...im going to a technical high school that has a very good background in computer programming. and the courses/electives im taking involve some kind of computer programming/network administrating and so on, and im doing this for 4 years. they're not like the 1 semister courses that most high schools offer.

Posted by micron on 07-20-2002 04:19 AM:

ic.
thats good. where in nj? a longshot but i went to caltech for mcse. sucked but what the heck. anyways, highschool cpp/java courses are 2 semester for college credit (ap). and my school had it just like a science course (1 period of class+1 every other day for lab)... nothing like an intro to computer semester class you're talking about.

eh. i took it two years back and got a 4 on the ap. maybe it was because i wrote in pencil instead of pen in part ii (or iii?).

haha ic. well i live in Fort Lee. kenvsryu and marvinhyung seemed to know where fort lee was.

you guys can just take a direct learning approach instead of slowly integrating concepts from hands-on-code experience, by picking up copies of an xhtml book, javascript, css (some books cover most of that plus XML), as well as a PHP or ASP book. PHP is, indeed, simple in terms of the language constructs, but logic and the creative use of f(x)'s is what provides the real challenge to programming. Once again, a book will help guide you in this aspect and minimize the stranded state most tyros experience when working with a new technology (assuming such a person hasn't programmed or did too much work in web languages). If you know html, php isn't too hard to get by. You just might want a book because it may allow you to focus better on learning it. I personally recommend Sams PHP and MySQL development, available at Amazon.com for about $34
